Cradled amidst natural surroundings, Silchar College is located in the fringes of Silchar town, away from the humdrum of the typical urban chaos. This institution is situated in a rural setting largely inhabited by socially and economically backward classes including tea garden labourers.
Perceiving the practical necessity of establishing a college and facilitating higher education in the area, some dedicated educationists, social workers and conscious publics of the locality came up together, conducted meetings, raised funds and finally laid the foundation of the college on 20th February, 1994. In its novice stage the classes were taken in Nehru High School, Singari. Later it was shifted in its present land donated by descendants of Late Tilak Singha, along with the cooperation from the family of late Mridanga Guru Surjyomani Singha.
After a roller-coaster journey of two decades, the college has been provincialized under provision 4(1) of the Assam Venture Educational Institutions (Provincialization of Services) Act, 2011 as Amended in 2012 and 2013. The family of Silchar College has so far been successful in maintaining a beautiful environment of cooperation, respect, dedication and sincerity among its members. At present the college is at a stable position and is equipped with the required number of classrooms, a library and the administrative block. Expansion and development works are still under process.
